Karina Lester

Karina Lester is a Yankunytjatjara woman and the Aboriginal Language Worker with the University of Adelaide’s Mobile Language Team.

In February 2013, she attended the Third International Conference on Language Documentation and Conservation in Hawaii. The theme of the conference was ‘Sharing Worlds of Knowledge’.

In this interview, Karina discusses some of the things she learnt at the conference and how these insights might be applied in South Australia. She also talks about a post-conference visit to Hilo where the Hawaiian language has been successfully revitalised over a 30-year period.

Note: this interview was recorded in two parts. The first part is English only. The second part is Yankunytjatjara only.
