posterThe South Australian Commissioner for Liquor and Gambling
(Mr Paul White) has introduced a new set of rules to better manage the sale of take-away alcohol in Coober Pedy.1

These rules came into effect on 30 September 2013 and are aimed at curbing “alcohol-related violence and anti-social behaviour” in Coober Pedy. They are also expected to reduce the amount of alcohol entering “prescribed” Aboriginal communities and lands, including Umoona community and all of the APY Lands.2

Under the new rules, Coober Pedy’s hotels, pubs, bottle shops and liquor stores are no longer allowed to “sell or supply liquor for off-premises consumption” to anyone who:

  • normally lives on a “prescribed land”, or
  • does not produce a particular type of photo ID.3

In addition, take-away alcohol can now only be sold between 11am and 8pm and the amount sold is limited to a “maximum of 750 ml per person per day.”

The rules also ban the sale of cask wine and prohibit a licensee from selling any take-away grog if he or she suspects it will end up in one of the ‘prescribed’ communities or lands.”4
