On 13 September 2012, the South Australian Government announced plans to purchase and operate a mobile dialysis bus.1

As part of that announcement, the Government said the $545,000 federally-funded bus would provide “regular, short-term services for patients with kidney disease who want to visit family and friends on the APY Lands” or other remote parts of the State.2

The Government originally expected to have the vehicle up and running “in early 2013.”3 This timeframe was later extended until “the second half” of the year and has now been pushed back to “early 2014.”4

In the meantime, Country Health SA has been leasing the Northern Territory’s Renal Dialysis Bus to enable short home visits for Anangu patients.

Between January and July 2013, the NT bus “made four visits to the APY Lands, visiting Marla, Ernabella [Pukatja], Fregon [Kaltjiti] and Mimili, and one visit to Yalata.”5

On average, each of these visits cost between $11,000 and $12,000 (for a week-long visit). This amount includes “the cost of leasing the bus from the Northern Territory, driver wages, fuel costs, SA Health staff wages, travel, accommodation, 4WD costs and other incidentals.”6

On 12 August 2013, SA Health advised the Paper Tracker that it was planning to use the Northern Territory bus for two more Anangu community visits this year (for visits to Amata and Yalata).7
