As well as tracking a handful of new commitments and providing updates on some ongoing matters, this issue introduces two new features that we hope you'll find useful. APY Lands: cutting electricity costs to lower food prices The State Government has announced plans to cut the electricity costs of community stores on the APY Lands so that the price of fresh foods and other essential items can come down. Read more ... Mimili: bush foods enterprise and Anangu employment In 2004, State government funding enabled a bush food garden and business to be established at Mimili. Formal training and ongoing employment for Anangu were key aspects of the project. Read more ... Iwantja: new community housing Nine new community houses are to be built in Iwantja. When completed, these houses should help reduce overcrowding in that community. Read more ... State Strategic Plan: economic boom times and Anangu disadvantage In 2008, the State's Social Inclusion Board is going to examine how Anangu and other disadvantaged South Australians can share in the benefits of the State's economic boom. Read more ... Maralinga Tjarutja: petroleum exploration and Anangu employment The State Government has granted two licences for petroleum exploration on the Maralinga Tjarutja Lands. Employment opportunities for Anangu are a key part of the deal. Read more ... APY Lands: South Australia Police's radio show In 2008, South Australia Police will re-launch a radio show to keep Anangu informed about police activities on the APY Lands. Read more ... UNANSWERED QUESTIONS There are some questions that governments seem very slow in answering. For example, for more than three months we've been waiting for the State Attorney-General to send us some information on the provision of accredited interpreters for Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara speakers appearing before the courts. We're also waiting for information on: - Federal funding arrangements for Umoona community
- how the State spent $1.8m at Yalata
- an audit into sporting and recreation facilities on the APY Lands.
