APY Lands: road maintenance

Earlier this week, the South Australian Government advised the Paper Tracker that in the first half of 2010, approximately 420 kilometres of road on the APY Lands were graded each month. The Government also advised us that “spot and routine grading" has improved the general condition of both the Pipalyatjara to Kalka road and the Pipalyatjara to Amata road.

APY Lands: the operations of the substance misuse facility

The substance misuse facility in Amata has rarely been used for its intended purpose. Over a two-year period, only eleven residential clients were accommodated at the facility. Typically, these clients stayed at the facility for just one or two days.

Mullighan Inquiry: child protection workers

In early 2009, as a response to the Mullighan Inquiry, the State Government appointed two child protection officers to work on the APY Lands. Permanent housing for these officers, located in Umuwa, is due to be handed over to Families SA later this week and “ will enable a quicker response time” to children deemed unsafe or at risk.

Yalata: regular bus service to and from Ceduna

Earlier this month, the South Australian Government reported that efforts to establish “a viable long-term public transport option” for people needing to travel between Yalata and Ceduna have not been successful.

APY Lands: investigation of dialysis options

A federally-funded study of the delivery of renal services to people from remote Aboriginal communities will be carried out by the Sydney-based George Institute. As part of the study, researchers will conduct community consultations in four regions, including the APY Lands.

APY Lands: Anangu interpreters

Last year, four students from the APY Lands qualified as Aboriginal language interpreters. Recently, the State Government established a review that it hopes will assist these interpreters to secure sustainable employment. The outcomes of the review are expected to inform future government funding allocations.

APY Lands: funding for family centres and homemaker programs

Over the last year, the number of family centres on the APY Lands has fallen from seven to four. During the same period, the number of trainees attached to these centres has also significantly declined.

Federal election: voting in Anangu communities
posted 12 August 2010
Mobile polling for the 2010 federal election begins in Anangu communities next Tuesday, 17 August. Earlier today, the Australian Electoral Commission released more precise information on the locations of the mobile polling booths. The additional information has been posted on this website.
